How to apply for sick pay

Members are entitled to sick pay for medical reasons when their sick leave with their employer has been fully used.
To be eligible, you must have paid for 6 consecutive months. If you have paid into another union within ASÍ and gained eligibility there, that eligibility follows you once you have paid for one month to Bárún.

The application process:

  1. Certificate of Sick Pay: To receive sick pay from us, you need to get a special Certificate of sick pay
(Note that this is not the same as a doctor's note for an employer. The association is not permitted to process sick pay without a Sick Pay Certificate.)
    -
It is important to check the dates on the certificate. You can get either a temporary or an indefinite sick pay certificate. The association is only permitted to pay sick pay for the period stated on the certificate. You must ask a doctor for a certificate starting from the day you become unpaid and exhaust your sick leave entitlement with your employer. The certificate cannot be older than one month.

  2. Employer's Certificate: This certificate needs to be filled out by your employer or supervisor. You can email it to them and they will send it back to you completed, or you can print it out and take it to them.
  3. Pay stubs for the last six months: Find the pay stubs from the last 6 months so the average salary can be calculated.

If you are in doubt or need assistance obtaining the above-mentioned data, you can contact us: baran@baran.is S: 480-5000

Once you have collected the above-mentioned data, it is time to apply online on the Association's website.

(If you are unable to apply online or need assistance with it, you can visit the office of the Labor Union at Austurvegur 56, Selfoss, once you have gathered all the documents listed above.)

  1. Log in to the Member Portal (button below): Use e-ID or the Auðkenni app to log in.
  2. Go to Benefits and find "Sick Pay"
  3. Fill out the application: Fill out all fields clearly, attach all documents to the application, and state a request for the use of personal allowance (to use the tax card with us or elsewhere).

(Note: Enter 1 króna in the amount field.

The deadline for submitting documents is the 25th of each month. The application and all documents must have been received by us by then.

Payment is made on the first of each month or the last business day before that. 80% is calculated on the average salary of the past 6 months.

You can also apply for sick pay through the Icelandic National Health Insurance on their website via My Pages. www.sjukra.is  (A sick leave certificate and an employer's certificate must also be included with the application)

Please note that any documents sent by mail or to baran@baran.is will not be considered unless an application has been submitted and staff are aware that some documents are to be received by a method other than through the Member Portal.
